Welcome

We are the 1st Surbiton (Sealion) Sea Scout Group.

We are a Royal Navy Recognised Sea Scout Group and the largest Scout Group in Royal Kingston District.

We have three sections: Beavers (2 Colonies), Cubs (2 Packs) and an enormous Sea Scout Troop.

We are also lucky enough to be partnered with an Explorer Sea Scout Unit.

These sections are for different age groups that are designed to give maximum enjoyment – Beavers for 6-8 year olds, Cubs for 8-10, Scouts for 10-14 and Explorers up to 18 years.

Have a look around the site to find out about us and what we do. If you would like more information or want to join, you can find the form on the bar at the top. This site is expanding all the time – new articles and pictures on the Beavers, Cubs, Sea Scouts and Explorers.

Recent News

Last night, Bob Bushell, District President, presented Lynda Bennett with a very rare 60-year Length of Service Award. Bob presented the award in front of not only the Cub pack, but over 50 current and former parents with “Dolphin” Cub Pack as well as a number of Scouters. Bob explained that although Lynda has served over 60 years (the actual number being 61 years, 7 months and counting) over 50 of those years have been with 1st Surbiton cubs. Bob explained that before Lynda started at 1st Surbiton, it only had a few cubs and was in danger of closing. Lynda moved to Surbiton in December 1974 and was immediately approached to help with running the cub pack by Roger Jones who was at that point the Scout Leader. The Scout Troop similarly only had a few Scouts at that time. From being likely to close, once Lynda started, numbers steadily increased to the point where in the late 1970s a second cub pack was needed, the result being the Walrus and Dolphin packs that still thrive today. Bob also explained that as well as running a very successful cub pack – he ran through some of the typical activities – camps, pack holidays and outings that Cubs in Dolphin Pack do, and how successful they had been in District competitions, Lynda has contributed to the movement in so many other ways - she had been a District Cub Scout Leader, had organised the District swimming team that competed in the County Swimming Gala – and won it for the District on several occasions and that she continues to support many of the functions of 1st Surbiton – running the hall bookings for parties (which involves issuing keys, checking the hall before and after the hire plus collecting and banking the fees) as well as checking everyone in the Group is paying the correct subscriptions every month, something that provides the main income for 1st Surbiton’s running costs and equipment. ...
